Abstract

Economic guidelines in Calvin
A number of factors in sixteenth century Geneva caused John Calvin to apply his mind to economic matters. He stated clearly that there is a moral side to economy and trade and developed clear guidelines in this regard, dealing with issues such as affluence and poverty, social justice, trade and labour relations, the right of ownership, credit and interest on loans. He did not hesitate to condemn malpractices such as extravagance, usury, fraud and corruption. This article explores to what extent Calvin’s thought on economic matters may still be relevant for present-day issues. By sound exegesis of relevant Scripture passages he came to conclusions that was new to philosophical and theological thought of his day. He has left a rich heritage of economic guidelines that may even today be applied as a solution to vexing problems of current society.
