Presently, it is once again important to look at 2 Corinthians 5:11-21. Challenges posed by Waever (2001) and Vos (2005) on the violence of reconciliation and atonement should be answered. In this article, the methods of Grice (1989) and Tolmie (2005) as well as a Semiotic analysis are utilised to come to a conclusion about non-violent atonement. From these analyses, certain conclusions are drawn. It is clear that violence by God is not an intrinsic part of reconciliation. Substitution and participation are essentially part of reconciliation, but, in conclusion, people’s sin disrupted the relationship with God. It is God, in his grace, who rectified this through his Son, Jesus Christ.
