Abstract

The South African society and the global world are marked by radical pluralism, causing far-reaching questions of life orientation. One in-depth Christian response comes from the German theologian, Michael Welker. In a creative way he combines philosophical, sociological and cultural-historical, but especially Biblical-theological insights, to distinguish between life-creating and life-demolishing forms of pluralism. Due to the richness of the biblical witness regarding the complex work of God as Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Welker is very positive towards pluralism. His differentiation between law and gospel helps us to generate criteria to recognise destructive forms of pluralism in our societies. This article is an attempt to analise Welker’s theological project in such a way that fruitful routes for theology, churches and our everyday life can be designated.
