Abstract

This article is based on the assumption that Phil 4:10-20 is part of one single letter and placed at the end for rhetorical purposes. A remaining problem, however, is the reluctant way in which Paul expresses his thanks. Why does he first tell the Philippians that he does not need their gifts (in 4:11-13 and 4:17), before acknowledging receipt thereof (4:18)? Is there evidence of a strained relationship between Paul and his audience? And is 4:10-20 an expression of thanks after all, or rather a rebuke?
