The relevance of Calvin and a Reformed church polity todayIn this article the point of departure is that a church polity and a church order is relevant – even today – if it serves the government of the church by Christ as the one and only Head of the church. A headship He exercises through His Word. Obedience to the Word makes the church relevant. Four factors serve the church in reaching this goal: the use of the principle of Sola scriptura, recognition of and a differentiation between constant principles and their application in a certain time, a church order without the tendency to regulate in detail and church polity as a servant of the church. These broad factors can be traced back to the reformer John Calvin and a reformed church polity of which Calvin is regarded as the spiritual father.
