The signifisance of the church in the life of the current members of the congregation. Part 1During the centuries christians understood the church as a very important part of their lives. The classical way of expressing this truth is the statement that when God is one’s Father the church is one’s mother. Since the nineteenth century this perception of the importance of the church changed drastically. Even members have a negative opinion of the church which they support. One of the contributing factors is the impact of the liberal theology of the nineteenth century known as the Moderne Richting. The first article traces the roots of this trend in the theology and characterise it. The second one pauses at one of the products of this theology, DP Faure founder of the Free Protestant Church in Cape Town.
