Abstract

Galatians 5:22-23 – Exegetical and Homiletical Notes
Preaching the fruit of the Spirit is often not contextual. In this article it is placed against the background of Paul’s struggle to help the churches in Galatia to recognise faith in the crucified Jesus that bear the fruit of the Spirit as the Christian identity mark. From Galatians 4:12 onwards Paul is launching a personal appeal to the Galatians to live their new life of freedom in Christ through love as it is manifested in service to each other. This is made possible by the indwelling of the Spirit. Within this framework the fruit of the Spirit should be perceived as a total packet. The sarks is the agent of self-centeredness whilst the Spirit empowers believers to love and serve the well being of the members of the faith community.
