Abstract

The Logic of Faith: Prayer as Point of Contact between Rationality and Experience in Rahner and Calvin
We investigate two theologians, the twentieth century Catholic theologian Karl Rahner and the sixteenth century Protestant theologian John Calvin. From different perspectives they propose a unity between rationality and experience or between theology and spirituality. Prayer is a key aspect in both proposals. Rahner’s perspective is anthropologically based: the logic of faith cannot be separated from the acceptance of one’s own human nature. Calvin takes a pneumatological point of view: in the correlation that exists between revelation and faith, salvation becomes a reality. Acceptance of this ‘reality’ is expressed in prayer. This study concludes that although the anthropological approach offers meaningful perspectives, the pneumatological approach is more convincing.
