This article explores the shift that has taken place in preaching as a movement from explicatio to applicatio, towards a renewed interest in the function of Scripture as an integrated part of the whole homiletical process. It takes a look at certain essential characteristics of Scripture, such as its human and divine structure, as well as its unique message. In conclusion, a number of implications for preaching are put forward, for example the need to approach the Bible both as a linguistic phenomenon and as the Word of God, and the necessity to preach Scripture in a way concurrent with its character and intention.Published
