Abstract

Inspired by the Dutch theologian Oepke Noordmans, who often sheds new light on biblical texts by pairing biblical persons or localities, the author analyses the contrast between Elijah and Judas. Elijah is a radical, a dissident in Israelite culture. He is an extremist. The message of this radical, a-cultural extremist is however the core of the Jewish and Christian canon: no other Name. Judas is the opposite. He is the son of perdition, the ultimate opponent of God’s final revelation. A closer analysis, however, shows them both to be more complicated. Elijah is a human being just like us, and at the very moment Jesus is handed over, the Gospel does not mention Judas as the son of perdition. Listening to the Scripture makes us aware that things are more ambiguous than religious fundamentalists suppose and nowhere near so comfortable as liberals argue.
OPDRACHT: Dit artikel is opgedragen aan Flip Theron. Het is voor mij een bijzondere vreugde voor hem een artikel te mogen schrijven. Het is ook een bijzondere opgave. Als men een artikel schrijft, mist men de nuance van het gesproken woord. Men mist nog meer de nuance van woord en wederwoord. Men mist het meest de persoonlijke nabijheid. Dat alles ontneemt het theologische vertoog diepgang en karakter. Dat voelt men het meest als de ander voor wie men schrijft geestelijk zeer nabij is, niet alleen theologisch maar ook als meer dan een vriend. Dat voelt men ook als de ander zo zeer leeft bij een theologie die altijd weer nieuwe vragen stelt, zodat elke these te snel geformuleerd is en iedere conclusie onvoldragen.
Ik neem de theologie van Flips meest geliefde auteur, Oepke Noordmans, als uitgangspunt voor dit artikel. Dat wil niet zeggen dat het een studie over Noordmans is. Dat zou in dit geval water naar de zee dragen zijn. Het is veel meer in de stijl van zowel Noordmansals van zijn leerling Theron om een poging te wagen in een theologische studie iets uit de Schrift ter sprake te brengen wat hopelijk aan het denken zet.
