The first aim of this article is to give an overview of some of the opinions that were expressed about the Huguenots of South Africa in history shortly before and after 1988 – the tercentenary year of their coming to South Africa. In this regard the aim of the article is also to analyse and evaluate some new historical information that was brought forward since 1988. The second aim of the article is to make a contribution to the efforts that were undertaken to establish the religious identity and heritage of the Huguenots that came to South Africa. The word “religious” is used in both the sense of their narrower church identity as well as their broader identity in life; in this regard one can also speak of their spirituality.Published
