Goals and assessment of church youth programmes – with reference to the practice in the Dutch Reformed Church.Youth programmes are a very important aspect in the ministry of the Church and therefore it is crucial that these programmes should be as relevant and effective as possible. In this regard the formulation of specific goals and the assessment of programs are essential. In this article a theoretical exposition of the function of these two aspects in youth ministry is given. The relationship between the concepts of accountability, the formulation of specific goals, intentionality and assessment is explained. Special attention is paid to the theological legitimisation of the implementation of assessment in youth ministry.
Reference is made of an empirical research of youth programmes that were conducted in the Dutch Reformed Church and in which responses referring to goals and assessment were obtained inter alia. The results show a great neglect of these two aspects. Finally guidelines for the implementation of assessement in youth ministry are given.
