The Bible in public moral guidanceThe traditional Reformed belief that the Bible provides moral guidance in all spheres of life, including the public sphere, is today increasingly questioned. In the article an analysis is made of the factors that contribute to the deconstruction of this belief in the South African context. An attempt is also made to reconstruct this Reformed belief in an acceptable way in the context of the new democratic society in South Africa. The moral guidance that the Bible can still provide in both the internal discussion of churches on social ethical issues and their participation in public debates on such issues in South Africa is demonstrated.
