Jerusalem’s miraculous escape from annihilation by the Assyrian army during the reign of king Sennacherib of Assyria and king Hezekiah of Judea is a well known biblical story amongst Christians, pastors and lay people alike (Is 36-39). Also well known to biblical scholars are the numerous Assyrian sources excavated (e.g. the Taylor Prisma and Lagish Relief ), amongst other sites, at Kuyunjik (Nineveh). In this paper the Assyrian sources are presented with the purpose of making pastors and lay people aware of their existence, content and possible benefits for teaching and preaching in the church context. This paper must be seen as an attempt to bring pastors and lay people in contact with some of the results in the field of biblical archaeology and it’s benefits for Bible study in general.Published
