Abstract

In the 1996 Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, human dignity is seen as one of the foundational values of the constitution. The other two are euality and freedom. Human dignity is also a core principle in Christian anthroplogy and ethics. In this article the constitutional value, as it is founded historically and in philosophy are compared with the Christian idea of human dignity as it developed in the reformed theological tradition. The article indicates that human dignity is indeed a principle that should form a cornerstone of a constitution , but that a christian-ethical interpretation of the concept may lead to different applications in law as would be done with a humanist historial-philosophical interpretation.
