Abstract

The Uniting Reformed Church in Southern Africa (URCSA) was established in 1994 after the unification of the Dutch Reformed Mission Church (DRMC) and the Dutch Reformed Church in Africa (DRCA). Three years later the Evangelical Reformed Church in Africa (ERCA) also joined the URCSA. These three churches were all established as a result of the vast and impressive mission work of the Dutch Reformed Church (DRC) in our country. I am of the opinion that the history of these three churches can be rightly described as a process of liberation to unity and witness. It is interesting to note how these three Reformed Churches embodied their confession, which is that Jesus Christ is the sole Lord of life and the church in the course of history. In their struggle, especially against apartheid and church domination, they were continuously inspired by the Word and the articles of faith and the undaunted witness of fellow Christians. The eventual (but incomplete) church unity is indeed a witness to our communal faith and the experience thereof in this world.
