Abstract

Liturgy as play: an enquiry into the non-functionality of the worship service
In this article attention is given to the tension between the so-called functionality and non-functionality of liturgy. Whilst the former can and has been described in many ways, the latter is not that easy to articulate. The concept of play is brought to fruition in this regard, as well as the dimension of fore-play. Some liturgical implications are ventured into, in terms of fundamental theological, anthropological, epistemological and eschatological questions put forward by the notion of play.
