Two views on Scripture. In one church. This represents a confessional and theological dilemma that reaches into the heart of the church’s existence. This is what this article is all about. In focussing on the theological thinking within the Dutch Reformed Church since 1950, the article identifies and contrasts two opposing notions (“traditional” and “modern”) on Scripture. In this regard different paths are pursued. This divergence constitutes a theological dilemma as the opposing views on Scripture also imply different confessional persuasions. The “modern” view on Scripture (man’s words on and experiences of God) in fact assumes a paradigm shift with respect to the classical doctrinal position. The true unity in the Dutch Reformed Church is therefore threatened at a time when the unification of the Family of Dutch Reformed Churches obtains the highest priority.
