Regaining their attention: Stronger neural networks for majority world learners, accustomed to rote-memorisation

Abstract

This chapter highlights the need for an active learning experience. Too often, students are forced to listen to lectures in a passive classroom environment. Yet a focus on neuroscience and knowledge as cognitive, affective, and behavioural will improve teachers’ educational methodology. Interaction with and comparison between the Majority World and Western educational models also yield helpful results. While many Majority World students have been limited because of the use of rote-memorisation, they also come from cultures that strongly encourage an active learning experience. This often comes through practical and community-based behaviours. When we study the diverse teachings of Jesus, we realise that he was a Master Teacher who engaged the minds and hearts of his listeners. In addition to these topics, this chapter offers numerous practical suggestions for more effective teaching.
