Abstract

In a series of three articles, the celebration of the Lord’s Supper in the Reformed tradition is explored. Such a historical reconstruction enables us to weigh the praxis surrounding our current celebration of the sacrament against our tradition and the initial intentions of the Reformers. Therefore this article firstly looks at the current celebration and reception of the celebration of the Lord’s Supper in the Dutch Reformed Church. This liturgical praxis is then placed against the historical development of the sacrament, focussing on Luther, Zwingli, Calvin, London, Frankenthal and the Netherlands. In conclusion some of the often forgotten intentions of the Reformers that came to the fore are highlighted. Part 2 of our series will describe the development in the celebration of the Lord’s Supper in South Africa and thereafter place it within the context of the liturgical praxis concerning the Lord’s Supper in the rest of the Reformed world.
