Pneumatological comments regarding contemporary discourse on God’s action in the worldThis article describes and assesses contemporary discourse on God’s action in the world –with specific reference to the 20 year project by the Centre for Theology and the Natural Sciences (CTNS) in Berkeley and the Vatican ObservaÂtory – on the basis of a number of brief statements. It then offers some pneumatological observations on the relation between cause and effect – with reference to Austin Farrer’s notion of “double agency†and the “causal jointâ€, Pannenberg’s use of the notion of “force fieldsâ€, African cosmology, and the Orthodox notions of logoi and energeiae, calling for more theological depth in such discourse. It is argued that discourse on God’s action should be understood in terms of “retrospective attribution†and should focus on the power of the Holy Spirit to transform the impact of human sin.
