Reformed mysticism? Reconsidering “bevinding†in KH MiskotteGiven the world-wide growth in interest in mystical or contemplative spirituality – also amongst Reformed Christians – this article asks what constitutes authentic mysticism in light of 20th-century corrections and retrievals of definitions of this phenomenon as reflected in the widely accepted definition of mysticism by Bernard McGinn. The similarities and differences between mysticism in this sense and Dutch theologian Kornelius Miskotte’s term “bevinding†is investigated as amounting to mysticism while retaining characteristic Reformed emphases.
