Abstract

Unity and moratorium: A historical perspective
The author addresses the call for a moratorium in the debate about church unity in the Dutch Reformed family. The debate about unity between white and black believers has been ongoing since 1829, without a conclusive decision being reached despite seemingly promising progress. For this reason the General Synod of URCSA called for a moratorium on talks about church unity in September-October 2008. The author discusses the concept of moratorium in the light of the moratorium debate in mission in the 1970s. He argues that certain aspects of the earlier debate may help in bringing the present moratorium to a successful conclusion. Finally he discusses progress at the first session of talks under the mediation of the World Alliance of Reformed churches.
