A rhetorical analysis of 1 Corinthians 3:1-9bThe approach in this article differs from that of Betz and others who tend to force ancient rhetorical categories on the Pauline letters. The analysis is done in terms of what is called “a grounded theoretical approachâ€. This approach is briefly summarised, followed by a description of the rhetorical situation of the letter and a systematic analysis of 1 Corinthians 3:1-9b. The focus of the analysis is on the manner in which Paul argues, the types of argument he uses and the rhetorical techniques that could enhance the impact of his communication. It is shown that all these strategies and techniques enable him to achieve his rhetorical objectives in this part of the letter.
