In conversation with Willie Esterhuyse’s God en die gode van EgipteThis article enters in a conversation with the recent book published by prof WP Esterhuyse God en die gode van Egipte. In die voetspore van die onsienlike. The article focuses in particular on the way in which the Old Testament is used and referred to. It is argued that similarities between ancient religions do not necessarily equal dependence. Various literary corpuses (Genesis 1-11; 12-36; 37-50; Exodus 1-18; 19-40) of the Old Testament are discussed highlighting differences with interpretations that Esterhuyse offers. Various themes treated by Esterhuyse are also taken up and discussed (sun of righteousness; a meganistic understanding of the will of God; God portrayed as father; righteousness). The conclusion reached is that valuable information is given in the book on the gods and religion of ancient Egypt but that the Old Testament is not treated in a satisfactory way because current ways of interpreting the Old Testament was not taken cognizance of.
