Spirituality in the NG Church of the 21st century against the background of Calvin and the Second ReformationIn this article the focus will briefly be on the spirituality of John Calvin and on that of the 17th century movement known as Dutch Pietism (Nadere Reformatie). Against that background the attention moves to the spirituality of the NG Church in the 19th and 20th century and how it among other factors paved the way for the split between the NG Church and the Gereformeerde Church. Finally the focus is more extensively on the different movements or spiritualities present in the NG Church in the 21st century. Though still somewhat tentative it is argued that the NG Kerk is currently entangled in a serious identity struggle as regards the major dimensions of its spirituality and character. This calls for great vision and leadership for the sake of the future of the NG Church.
