Abstract

Calvin and mission in view of his commentary on the epistle to the Romans
The reformers were believed to have little interest in mission but the circumstances they encountered in order to establish the churches of the Reformation meant that they had to deal with mission in a different way. Calvin himself was involved in actions to spread the gospel in a different manner throughout the whole of Europe and even Brazil. The commentary on Romans shows that he was well aware of the significance of the spreading of the Christian message throughout the world. He explained the implications of the apostleship of Paul as having the task to spread the message to all nations. Dealing with sin and justification he indicated the wonder of the radical salvation in Jesus Christ. Although the nations did not seek God, He bestowed upon them his free grace even though they were totally without merit. Mission developed in different ways but Calvin’s main message still remains intact.
