Abstract

Many church leaders and congregation members discuss the theme of renewal and transformation in the church. Often they discuss these transformation processes from the perspective of sociology or management sciences. One can learn from these perspectives but it is a pity that in many instances they neglect the biblical basis of renewal. This article is the first in a series of two articles and poses a possible answer to the following question: What does the Bible teach us on renewal and transformation in the church? This article focuses on the Old Testament and the issue is discussed under the following subheadings: (1) birth and growth of the people of God (patriarchs); (2) God’s people in Egyptian slavery; (3) God’s desert people with Torah and tabernacle; (4) God’s people settle in a land; (5) God’s people with a king and temple; (6) God’s people in exile; (7) God’s people restored after exile; (8) sages – part of God’s people. The Old Testament testifies that God’s people reflected on every new phase in their history. In almost every instance there were new ministering structures and new leadership patterns. In many cases we hear new theological viewpoints or a reaction to previous perceptions.
