The article contributes towards seeing and understanding the nature and extent – the “bleak immensity” – of HIV and AIDS in South African society today. It argues that we are in fact in the midst of “a gendered pandemic” which has dire consequences for the lives of women (and children). The nature of this pandemic presents a particular challenge to the church.Published
