In part I of this study (see previous article) it was concluded that Isaiah 61:1-3(4-9)10-11 belongs to the same literary category of the so-called Servant Songs of Deutero-Isaiah (Is 42:1-4; 49:1-6; 50:4-9, and 52:13-53:12, cf 51:16). However, a main argument supporting the latter view remains to be discussed. This relates to the idea of “democratisation” referred to previously. The discussion hopes to show that as interpretative key this concept enhances the link between Isaiah 61 and the first four Servant Songs. The concept also creates a framework or role for the figure of Isaiah 61 to mediate the accomplishments of the Servant for the benefit of and to be transferred to the servants of Trito-Isaiah. The questions to be raised include the following: Should the Servant figure be understood collectively or individually? What is the office of the Servant figure? Does the figure reveal any messianic features? Can the figure be identified historically? Are there any links between this figure and the New Testament?Published
